How it works

Program structure & session flow

Sessions follow a steady rhythm so children can predict, revisit and go deeper — the shape of a morning stays consistent even as each week’s theme changes.

The rhythm of a session

Every session moves through the same four movements:

  1. Free-play arrival — children interact with each other, parents and staff with Creative Play toys, games and activities.
  2. Core curriculum block — each week a different theme, such as IMAGINATION, WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES, NATURE, or OUR BIG, VAST WORLD.
  3. Special presentations — dance and theatre troupes, magicians, artists, writers and musicians.
  4. Documentation — creative portfolios record each child’s steps.

The repetition is deliberate: diverse art forms and multiculturalism enter the schedule at consistent intervals, so learning spontaneously emerges, builds upon itself, and goes deeper with constant revisiting. See the curriculum and the studio’s enrichment approach for how the themes work.

The three-month cycle

Children’s studio programs run in three-month cycles. Each cycle brings a new set of weekly themes and a new round of special presentations — so returning to the studio means going deeper, not starting over. Each family volunteers during one session per cycle; see how parents take part.

The space

Sessions are held in the first floor banquet room of the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West — a spacious, naturally lit room kept open and sparse, so the environment itself invites play. Parents may use the alternate space while sessions are in motion.
