Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what families, artists and volunteers ask most — with links for going deeper.

What ages does the studio serve?

The children’s studio is designed for children eighteen months through seven years. Adults have their own track — the Creative Witness playshops — and the studio also designs custom programs for all age groups on request.

What is the Reggio Emilia approach?

The studio’s enrichment follows a Holistic Process approach inspired by the Reggio Emilia method and philosophy: education is relationship-based, and creativity is documented so children, parents and teachers can revisit each stage of development.

What happens in a session?

Every session moves through the same rhythm: free-play arrival, a weekly theme curriculum block, special presentations from visiting artists, and documentation in each child’s creative portfolio.

How do parents participate?

Every family volunteers for one session over the three-month cycle: parents co-teach classes, partner in Free-Play with other families, and assist with documentation.

How do we apply and what does it cost?

All families apply to the studio. A reservation fee or the full month’s tuition holds a place, and your acceptance letter designates the payment terms for your program; a membership packet, class schedule and family orientation date follow acceptance. See enrollment & tuition.

Are scholarships available?

Yes — a limited number of monthly scholarships support low-income individuals and families who wish to join the programs. Call the studio at 718-623-2775 to inquire.

Where are sessions held?

Sessions are held in the first floor banquet room of the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West, Brooklyn, New York 11215 — spacious, naturally lit and kept open and sparse.

How can I support the studio?

The studio welcomes fiscal donations and merchandise purchases; support keeps scholarships and community programs alive.
